[Diary of a voyage on the convict ship Hougoumont] : [on a voyage from England to Fremantle, 1867-1868] / by Denis [Cashman]. 1867-1868.

Cashman describes his distress at leaving his family; the voyage; birds and fish; concerts on board, with songs listed; starting up the newspaper the Wild Goose; seeing the Southern Cross; the trade winds; weather; position; Christmas celebrations; arriving in Fremantle . The diary is followed by reprints of poems and prose from the Wild goose, and a page of Cashman's account of treatment on board. Cashman and his fellow travellers were Fenians. They were kept separately from the other convicts, and received better treatment.

Denis B. Cashman was an Irish immigrant, worked as a journalist in Boston and partner of a printing firm. Prior to his immigration to the United States, Cashman participated in the Irish Republican Brotherhood (Fenians). After being arrested, he was transported in 1867 to a penal colony in Fremantle, Western Australia. While it is unclear how Cashman left Australia, it is thought that he escaped with his friend and literary collaborator, the poet John Boyle O'Reilly....
